Dr. Barakah Day does not diagnose ADHD quickly or casually. A proper evaluation is not a single appointment with a checklist. It requires gathering information from multiple sources- parents, teachers, and the child, and taking the time to rule out other conditions that can look like ADHD, such as anxiety, sleep disorders, learning disabilities, or vision problems. We do this work carefully because an accurate diagnosis changes everything.

Once a diagnosis is confirmed, we develop a personalized management plan with the family. Treatment is never one-size-fits-all. For some children, behavioral strategies and school accommodations are sufficient. For others, medication is an important part of the plan. We involve the family in every decision and adjust the plan over time as the child grows and their needs change.

How long does the ADHD evaluation process take?

The evaluation typically spans two to three visits. The first visit is a detailed history and discussion with parents. Between visits, we collect teacher ratings and review school records. The second visit includes the diagnostic discussion with Dr. Day and a plan conversation. Accuracy matters more than speed; we will not rush this.

Does ADHD mean my child needs medication?

No. Medication is one tool, not a requirement. Many children do very well with behavioral strategies, school accommodations, and organizational support alone. We discuss every option with families and make decisions collaboratively. If medication is appropriate, we start low, go slow, and monitor closely.

My child's teacher suggested ADHD. What should I do?

Schedule an evaluation. Teacher observations are a critical part of the process, teachers see children in a structured, comparative environment that reveals attention and behavior patterns parents cannot always observe at home. We will walk you through the next steps.

Can girls have ADHD?

Absolutely — and girls are frequently underdiagnosed because ADHD often presents differently in them. Girls more commonly show the inattentive subtype: daydreaming, losing track of assignments, difficulty organizing, appearing quiet rather than hyperactive. This pattern is easier to miss. We screen for ADHD in all children regardless of gender or presentation.

What is the difference between ADHD and just being a kid?

All children have moments of inattention, impulsivity, and high energy. ADHD is diagnosed when these patterns are persistent, present in multiple settings (home and school), more severe than typical for the child’s age, and causing meaningful impairment in daily functioning. The distinction matters, and we take the time to make it carefully.

What if my child is diagnosed with both ADHD and anxiety?

Co-occurring conditions are very common in children with ADHD. Anxiety, learning disabilities, and sleep disorders frequently co-exist. We identify and address the full picture, not just the most obvious diagnosis. This may involve referral to a psychologist or therapist in addition to pediatric management.
